Posted by admin on May 15th, 2010 and filed under investment banker | 2 Comments »

Im just about to pick my GCSE options, and what I really want to do is become an investment banker. But what GCSE/A levels will I need to become one? Plus, what exactly does an investment banker have to do and how much money can one make? Please guys Id really appreicate some help on this.

While a degree in any discipline is acceptable, many companies prefer related subjects such as accounting, economics, mathematics or statistics. Increasingly, entrants have a Masters degree such as an MBA or MSc in a related subject. A second language is also extremely useful.
The following qualifications may be useful as a first step:
The 14-19 Diploma in business, administration and finance
BTEC Certificates and Diplomas in business and finance subjects
City & Guilds qualifications in business and finance subjects
IFS Certificate or Diploma in financial studies.

An investment banker’s tasks could include:
advising clients how to raise finance to expand their business
    arranging loans to fund expansion
advising clients on merging with or taking over other businesses
arranging financial backing for new businesses
managing the investments of business and private clients which can total billions of pounds
taking action to protect businesses from changes in currency exchange rates and interest rates
trading in stocks and shares, securities and bonds
buying and selling large property developments.

    Investment banker?

Posted by admin on May 12th, 2010 and filed under investment banker | 3 Comments »

Can someone please explain to me exactly what an investment banker does as well as how you go about becoming one? What major do you chose in college? How much does an investment banker make? Thanks

There are different areas in IB — the previous poster went to a financial planner, not an IB person. IBs make large deals, lend money to companies, have a research side that recommends stock and debt buys, etc. They also handle restructurings, stock offerings (IPOs), and often work with private venture companies for private money.

Usually an economics or finance degree is helpful in getting an IB job out of school, but usually these companies recruit at the better schools. Top grades are essential, as are internships. IBs expect you to go for an MBA or law degree usually after about 2-4 years experience.

    Here are some top companies:
    Goldman Sachs
    JP Morgan (part of Chase)
    Morgan Stanley
    Deutsche Bank
    UBS
There are hundreds of small boutique firms as well. New York and London are the main IB locations, as well as Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
